Colonel Billy F. Shackelford

Colonel Billy F. Shackelford, 77, of Whitehouse, Texas, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at his home, near Whitehorse, Texas.

He was born Jan. 26, 1934, near Whitehouse, Texas, to Nellie and Fred D. Shackelford.

He attended Texas A & M University. During college, he spent one summer with the family of his roommate George Ed Carr in Lebanon, and worked at Detroit Tool & Engineering. He graduated in the class of 1956 with a BS in industrial engineering, and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years. His first assignment was as the SAC Operations Officer at Utapao Royal Thai Air Base in Thailand. During his career he also served at the Pentagon.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, the former Paula Burtin, of Lebanon; three sons, David Shackelford and his wife, Donna, of Emory, Texas; Dean, of Dallas, Texas, and Darrel and Theresa Shackelford, of Frisco, Texas; five grandchildren, Hannah and Paul David Shackelford, of Emory, Texas, and Daniel, Jason, and Nicole Shackelford, of Frisco, Texas; a sister, Nellie Jean and her husband, Joe Turner, his brother, Gaylon Joe Shackelford and wife, Barbara, all of Whitehouse, Texas; an aunt, Beatrice Ivy, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial has been established for the building fund of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Whitehouse, Texas, where his funeral service with full military honors were conducted.
