The Lebanon High School boys’ swim team competed at the Monett Duals on Tuesday in one of their first meets of the year.

Coming into the season, the ‘Jackets feature nine swimmers with only two, both juniors returning from last year, and two more have competed outside of school. The remaining five swimmers, one senior, one junior and three freshmen, this is the first year they have ever competed in swimming, according to head coach David Krev.

Below are the following results from the Monett meet:

Team captain Shane Stowe dropped his 200-yard free time three seconds to 2:10.45 and his 100 fly time to 1:05.52. Krev mentioned that Stowe swam strong, but needs to improve his turns and then will be able to drop his times even more.

Senior Seth Statley improved both his 50 free and 100 free by over 30 seconds to 37.31 and 1:33.34.

“Seth’s stroke has come along way but has a lot to improve on as a new swimmer,” Krev said. “Before August 6, he didn’t even know what swimming was, so it was good to see him with that solid of a time.”

Returning junior Thomas Cleveland gave a solid performance in the 200 free and 100 back. He was within one second of his personal best, according to Krev.

Juniors TJ Davis And Zach Wilsford are also new swimmers and showed significant improvement. TJ swam 40.14 in the 50 while Zach had a 35.57. In the 100 free, Davis went for 1:34.5 and Wilsford swam a 1:26.93.

According to Krev, Freshman Caleb Whittington had an excellent performance in the 200 IM.

“In the previous meet Caleb was disqualified for his breaststroke kick in the IM, and he worked to correct that through the week,” Krev said. “Caleb’s time in the IM was 2:34.37 and his time of 107.9.0 was another solid performance.”

Freshmen Reed Danek and Greg Keen swam in their first ever competitions and fared well, according to Krev. Danek competed in the 50 and 100 free, with times of 35.69 and 1:25.90 and Keen swam the 100 free in 1:27.48.

“Both of these swimmers performed well in their first ever, and I am hoping to see continued improvement on the strokes and turns down the line,” he said.

As the season continues, Krev is hoping to continue to stress conditioning.

“The team continues to work on our endurance and conditioning,” he said. “All of the swimmers can do an entire set of 100 meter swims without stopping. As the condition improves, their times will continue to go down. Work and turns, starts and race pacing will continue into the season.”

The swim team will compete again on Thursday, Sept. 20 at Seymour YMCA.
