On a beautiful October night, the Lebanon High School boys’ soccer team defeated the Fair Grove Eagles 5-1 at ‘Jacket Soccer Field.

At halftime of the contest, head coach Matt Jernigan took the time to honor his nine seniors that are featured on the team.

The 2019 seniors are Zach Jamieson, Austin Stokes, Maverick Haley, Mason Bradley, Cameron Moore, Ethan Murray, Dillon Baker, Oscar Sandoval, and Robbie Wadley.

“This is an amazing senior class,” Jernigan mentioned. “Most of these guys have played their whole life and love soccer. They work well together and know their role on the team. It has been great to see
them lead this group of players this year. “

Lebanon (12-5 overall) got on the board quick with sophomore Quinton Doughty crossing a ball that was deflected by Luis Vasquez and kicked into the back of the net by senior Dillon Baker.

Later in the first half, LHS had a nice over the top pass to junior Zach Richards, who then proceeded to dribble past the Eagles’ defense and chip it over the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The Yellowjackets would score again in the first half on a corner kick by Richards, and Angel Pedroza came flying through with a header to extend the lead to 3-0. Baker would later score again in the first half to cap the scoring on an assist from Richards.

“I thought that we came out and did what we needed to do,” Jernigan said. “We played some guys in different spots tonight and gave all of our seniors some time that they might not normally get on varsity. It was good to see those seniors step up and play well.

“I thought Dillon Baker had a great game and was in the right place at the right time to score those two goals. Luis Vasquez had two assists and played well in the midfield.”

In the second half, Richards would score his second goal of the game to cap the scoring at 5-1. With the goal, it moved Richards to 29 goals on the season, tying the single-season goal record at LHS.

“Zach is one of the best players I have had the privilege to coach here at Lebanon,” Jernigan said about Richards. “He is a humble kid but knows when he needs to step up. He got his 29th last night and tied the single-season record for goals, but he could have had more. He really wanted it to be about the seniors on Monday night and had some great assists to set up other players.

“That is the type of kid he is; he cares about the team as a whole, not just records.”
