A National Guard recruiter led a 25-mile hike last Wednesday with the theme, “20-plus miles for the Class of 2020.”

SSG Curtis Sansom, the National Guard recruiter in Lebanon, led the 25-mile hike along North Highway 5 from Lebanon High School to Camdenton High School to honor the class of 2020.

“We’re definitely trying to inspire young students, they’ve suffered enough, it’s time for us to suffer a little bit for them,” Sansom said.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” he said. “I grew up around Lebanon and I graduated from Lebanon High School, I never had the motivation to do it until now. So I put it out and these young people volunteered to do it with me.”

Wednesday morning, while stopping at Mike’s Country Store for a break, Sansom said the hike was making good progress.

“We’re starting to feel it a little bit, walking through we grass our feet are a little wet,” he said. “We started at about 7:30 and we’ve done about 6 and 1/2 miles in two hours. It’s a beautiful day, just a little humid.”

Joining Sansom were Sgt. Megan Brown, Camdenton National Guard recruiter; Sgt. Connie Kraft. Sedalia National Guard recruiter; Specialist Austin Mulitalo and Private Caleb Jones, a soldier from Rolla who decided to join the group.
