County unemployment rate hits 14.8%

Posted

The unemployment rate in Laclede County for April is the highest it has been in almost 30 years.

The Missouri Economic Research and Information Center recently released the April unemployment statistics for the state. Laclede County hit a rate of 14.8 percent, which is more than double the rate in March. It is also the highest unemployment rate in the county since February 1991 when the county realized a 16.1 percent rate, according to the data.

“It shows that we’re not immune from global issues or pandemics like this. We knew from stories we’d seen, knowing there were some layoff layoffs, we knew we’d have a higher unemployment rate than normally at that time of the year. April was a rough month and may go down as one of the rough months on record percentage-wise,” said Lebanon REDI (Regional Economic Development, Inc.) President/CEO Brian Thompson.
