Senior Cameron Fisher placed second in the Missouri Class 2 District 5 singles tournament on Saturday in Helias to secure a spot in the State tournament.

The tournament will be held on Thursday, May 20, in Springfield at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

“I was pumped,” Fisher said after qualifying for State. “I really wasn’t expecting it at all. It was such a good feeling knowing all my hard work and effort paid off.”

Fisher started his day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mueller (Helias) before securing a 6-3, 6-0 win over Andrews (Capital City) to advance to the semifinals.

During his semifinal match, Fisher knew he wasn’t playing his best tennis but battled back to win in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 6-3) to defeat Huang from Rolla to punch his ticket to State.

“Honestly, I wasn’t even thinking about making it (to State) during the match,” he mentioned. “I just wanted to play my best tennis that entire day and finish the season off strong.

“I wasn’t playing well (against Huang), but I eventually battled back and found a way to win.”

In the finals, Fisher dropped his match in straight sets to Jack Renfrow (Warrensburg) 3-6, 0-6.
