Downtown Lebanon is continuing to grow and attract visitors, according to a presentation at Monday’s City Council meeting.
The Council heard a report from Main Street Executive Director Sarah Angst Stewart. She said downtown sales tax revenue had doubled since the first downtown director was hired in 2019, from $5 million to $10 million in 2023.
"Pretty impressive for four years. I think what we're doing downtown is working,” 'she said. "We expect to see an increase again for '24. We're waiting to get those numbers.
She noted the 229 Project that attracted many applications and Missouri Main Street has asked the building owners to give a presentation at its state conference..
Last year, the city expanded the Downtown area so that it now includes an area on Madison and another at the Farmer’s Market area.
“We’re looking forward to possibly another addition this year,” she said. “The county has expressed interest in the courthouse campus becoming part of Downtown.”
Last year, the City Council approved the process for closing streets downtown.
