Real ID compliance takes effect May 7

Requirement affects domestic flights, federal facilities

Posted

Starting May 7 of this year, those using state-issued driver licenses and nondriver identification cards to fly domestically, visit federal facilities and nuclear power plants will need to ensure they are REAL-ID compliant.
According to an April 24 press release from Governor Mike Kehoe’s office, residents will need a REAL ID compliant identification card, passport or other Transportation Security Administration-approved documentation to board federally regulated domestic flights. That documentation will also be required to access federal facilities and enter nuclear power plants.
The Missouri Department of Revenue’s FAQ page on REAL ID notes that compliant driver licenses and nondriver ID cards will have a star in the upper right-hand corner, while noncompliant licenses and cards will have “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES” in the same corner.
Kehoe’s press release notes that residents can apply for a REAL ID-compliant driver license or non-driver identification card at a Missouri license office, with the transaction and processing fees for such identification being the same as a non-compliant license.

Specific transaction and processing fees can be found under the Missouri DOR page on the Missouri driver license and nondriver ID. Residents should notify the person assisting them with their license/card that they are seeking REAL ID compliance at the start of their interaction.
Kehoe’s press released added duplicate transaction fee waiver provisions may apply for other eligible first-time compliant card applicants that currently hold a valid document with more than six-months before expiration.
