Flossie Mae Shamel, 99, passed away peacefully with family by her side on September 11, 2025. She was born November 4, 1925, the youngest child of Amos and Ira Jones. Having made an early profession at McBride, faith remained a guiding force throughout Flossie’s life.
On October 15, 1947, she married her lifelong sweetheart, Leland Shamel, whom she had first claimed as her “boyfriend” in the first grade. Growing up, Flossie dreamed of two things: to teach school and marry Leland Shamel. She happily accomplished both. She and Leland enjoyed riding horses, taking float trips, and road trips in Model-T’s with friends but best was their life together on their farm in Competition. On his deathbed, Leland told her if there’s a way in Heaven, he would find her
Flossie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leland; her daughter, Dana; and her grandson, John Hacker.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Steve) Trantham; son-in-law, David Hacker; grandchildren Shannon (Jason) Sparks, Emily (Tim) Beckman, Scott (Sara) Hacker, Wesley (Tammy) Trantham, Leland Wade Trantham, and granddaughter-in-law, Kiley (Kirk) Sullivan; great-grandchildren Henry, Sam, Jack, Annie and Emmaline; plus hundreds of school children.
She loved teaching and received cards from former students even on her 99th birthday. In 2019, Flossie was honored with the School Bell Award from the Missouri Association of Rural Education. She participated in a Missouri nursing home pageant with recitation of all the counties in Missouri as her talent. She was a gardener, a great cook, and was known to make several pies every week.
The family is grateful to Good Shepherd Hospice and the many caregivers who supported Flossie with exceptional kindness. Thanks also to the friends and family who continued to visit Flossie in Bolivar and Springfield, including Bill and Sherry Shamel; Barb and Don Luthy; Joe and Mary Ellen Prather; and Wes and Tammy Trantham, who brought flowers on their Sunday visits.
No services are planned; burial was private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those remembering Flossie honor her by sharing an act of kindness
