Sylvia Maxine Sharp, 90, of Lebanon died Monday, July 31, 2023, in her home.
The daughter of Homer Hooper and Othia Bartema May Turner Riggs Hooper, she was born Jan. 9, 1933 in Lebanon.
On Aug. 30, 1953, she was united in marriage to Marvin Eugene Sharp. To this union one daughter and three sons were born.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin of 59 years; her daughter, Diana; her son, David; her daughter-in-law, Debra Sharp; her sister, Audra Sharp; and two brothers, Burrell (Johnny) Riggs and Robert (Bobby) Turner.
Sylvia is survived by two sons, Daniel “Joe” Sharp and his wife, Jaquetta of Lebanon, and Homer “Carl” Sharp of Lebanon; a daughter-in-law, Jayne Sharp of Lebanon; eight grandchildren, Shannon, Stephanie, Teah, Jonathan, Daniel, Megan, Autumn and Kati; sixteen great-grandchildren, James, Jacob, Justin, Katelynn, Brayden, Chloe, Craten, Troy, Kallie, May, Weston, Braxton, Kolton, Isaac, Karli and Holden; five great-great-grandchildren, Skyler, Chloe, Reed, Rhett and Casen; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Sylvia was born in the Blackfoot area and graduated from Lebanon High School in the class of 1950. She attended and graduated from Southwest Baptist College in 1952 with an Associate’s degree in Commerce.
She began teaching in 1952 for two years. In between those years she married Marvin and soon began their family. As a military wife, she followed her husband for seventeen years, of which nine were spent in Germany. Suring those seventeen years she was a homemaker, raising her four children.
Following Marvin’s retirement, their family returned to Lebanon to make their home. Sylvia enrolled in Southwest Missouri State to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in education and a Master’s degree in reading. She graduated in 1973 and taught in the Waynesville R-VI School district until her retirement in 1995. She had such a love for teaching that she continued to teach in Lebanon as a personal tutor for ten years.
Sylvia professed her faith in Christ and was baptized at an early age. She was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church in Lebanon.
In her spare time she loved to garden, tending to her many beautiful rose bushes. She loved raising her laying hens and going to the library every week to get a good book to read. Give her a good book and a big puzzle and she was happy.
She loved her family and was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. Sylvia had a special way with babies and could calm the fussiest baby.
She is loved and will be greatly missed. We celebrate her life and her accomplishments and know her family and friends will cherish the wonderful memories she created with them during her lifetime.
Funeral services for Sylvia Sharp were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Holman-Howe Funeral Home in Lebanon. Burial was in Mount Rose Memorial Park. A memorial has been established to Second Baptist Church or the Lebanon-Laclede County Library and donations may be made at the funeral home.
